Who Is Naima….

Naima is a South African talented writer, poet, vocalist and heralded as The First Lady of Urban Soul.

Born the daughter and grand-daughter of world renowned multi-reed instrumentalists Rene Mclean and Jackie Mclean. Naima Mclean has taken her time to develop and nurture her musical DNA and heritage.Naima Mclean is an enormously talented actress, poet and vocalist born in New York City and raised in numerous cities across South Africa by her American father and South African mother.

Naima Mclean has earned a degree in performing arts and gender studies from the University of Cape Town, She has performed, acted and sang in South Africa and Europe. As a vocalist Naima Mclean infuses soul, spoken word, hip hop and pop among other genres to create a distinct style she calls “Urban Soul”. She debuted at Cape Town Jazz Festival in 2011 and was asked to return in 2015. Naima Mclean has continued to perform and grow her musical career, her highlights have been to open for International renowned RnB singer Joe Thomas on his tour to South Africa, performing for 50 000 people at the Nelson Mandela Sports and Cultural Day at Soccer City stadium and European Tours to Glasgow, Scotland and Dijon, France

Naima Mclean’s performances as poet includes a range of high profile corporate events most recently includes, but limited to, the Farewell Gala Dinner for Head of UN Women – Phumzile Mlambo –Ngcuka, the African Development Bank Awards in Rwanda and The Rockefeller Foundation Launch for Impact Sourcing. She is a member of the African Leadership Network and through her work as a social activist and performer she frequently travels across the continent and abroad; her passion for transformation has earned her the title of “Global Youth Leader” by an international organization and publication – “Youth Leader”

Naima Mclean’s star power saw her being selected by Levi’s Strauss SA to represent one of the 4 faces of their Believe – Curve ID campaign Aligned to Levi’s® brand values of courage, integrity, authenticity & empathy; and a representative of 1 of the 4 distinct body shapes that characterize the new fits. The Bold Curve. This songstress, poet & actress is the face of the Levi’s® Bold Curve. As part of 4 dynamic Divas that not only feature in the local advertising campaign, Naima also worked closely with the Levi’s® team on the brand’s longstanding HIV/AIDS initiative, Levi’s® Red for Life. In a series of events that were held around the country, the 4 Divas hosted live gigs followed by interactive discussion groups focusing on the topic of life & love in the time of HIV and AIDS.

Naima Mclean’s TV roles have included cameo features on one of South Africa’s most watched TV dramas “Generations”. She’s a feature character in the internationally renowned UK TV series Wild At Heart andstarred in a feature film as leading female in Vehicle 19 starring Hollywood celebrity Paul Walker.

Naima Mclean is now working on the release of her next album to market. It is a collection of urban anthemic tracks with a cross-cultural flavour and appeal. Her lyrics are highly personal and throw emotional challenges in the face of the listener causing you to think while at the same time enjoying the story being weaved before you. Naima Mclean has released two hit singles from her new project; Hero ft AKA and Ride ft Reason. Both made waves on SA radio.
